Weston writes “I live in the northern part of South Carolina, and for the first five or six years my wife and I were together, we went hiking or camping almost every weekend. We loved exploring waterfalls and trails across the surrounding states. A lot of the time we chose remote areas where we wouldn’t run into many people.
The day this happened was different.
We were visiting Crabtree Falls in North Carolina, a very popular waterfall along the Blue Ridge Parkway in the Blue Ridge Mountains. It’s still remote in the sense that it’s deep in the mountains, but it’s a well-known destination, especially in the summer which is when we were there. This was in late July of 2016, well before Hurricane Helene, so all parts of the trail were open.
The hike to the falls is about 2.5 to 3 miles round trip. About halfway in, there’s a spot where water runs down the mountain and crosses the trail. It spreads across a wide rocky area, with large boulders lining both sides as far up as we could see. Curious, we decided to step off the main trail and climb alongside the water to see where it led. We thought maybe there was another waterfall upstream or at least we’d discover where this sizable creek originated.
We climbed straight up those rocks for about half a mile. Eventually, we started hearing what sounded like a fairly large waterfall. We figured we were close and also that we probably weren’t supposed to be there. There were signs everywhere warning hikers not to leave the trail, and by then we were well off it.
I was climbing ahead in case my wife needed help navigating the rocks. When we reached the top of a large boulder near the sound of the falls, I pulled myself up and immediately froze.
At the base of a waterfall roughly 25 or 30 feet tall, something enormous was crouched near the bottom, about five feet above the creek it fed into. At first, I couldn’t process what I was looking at. I just knew it was huge.
My wife hadn’t crested the rocks yet, but she could tell something was wrong. I could hear her asking what was happening, but I couldn’t respond. I couldn’t move. I was staring at the back of this thing, crouched low. I knew it wasn’t a bear, and that realization locked me in place.
It didn’t seem to know we were there. The roar of the waterfall likely masked our approach. And since everyone else was a mile below at the main waterfall, it probably didn’t expect anyone to come up that way.
Then my wife climbed up beside me.
The moment she saw it, she screamed.
The creature turned toward us and rose to its full height in one fluid motion. It made a deep, guttural grunting sound. That’s when I understood what I was seeing and my fear went from paralyzing to overwhelming.
I had never been that terrified in my life.
As it stood there, I became aware of a strange pressure in my ears, like being underwater at the bottom of a deep pool. I could barely hear my wife screaming beside me. I’m not sure whether the pressure began when it saw us or when it stood and made that sound, but it persisted the entire time it was in view.
The creature was over seven feet tall I’m certain of that. In high school, I had a close friend who was 6’10”, and I saw him every day for two years. I know what seven feet looks like. This thing was taller than him, and it was only about 40 or 50 feet away.
Its hair appeared auburn at the tips, possibly darker closer to the skin. Its skin itself looked charcoal-colored. I didn’t get a good look at its hands, but I clearly saw its face and it’s something I wish I could forget. Its head tilted slightly to the left as it made that grunting noise.
When it moved, it did something no human could have done. In a single step, it crossed the creek and dropped from its crouched position about five feet down to creek level without jumping, slipping, or stumbling. The rocks were large and slick, but it moved effortlessly.
Then, within just a few more strides, it went up the mountain and disappeared.
As it moved, I noticed its proportions more clearly. Its knees stayed bent as it walked, and its legs seemed short relative to its torso. Its arms looked long in comparison, especially the forearms, which appeared longer than what I’d consider normal for a human. The proportions were wrong, almost exaggerated.
It was over quickly, but it felt much longer. Once it was completely out of sight, the pressure in my ears finally faded.
We didn’t camp there that night like we’d planned. In fact, we stopped hiking and camping altogether for quite a while after that.
It’s something my wife and I will never forget.”

Thank-you for sharing your encounter. I’m anxious to hear any additional details.

Fantastic sighting. They certainly do not like to be sneaked up upon. Was it just there to drink water? Hope you come on the show.

I live in Little Switzerland, nc. Crabtree falls is just 8 miles away! Loved this episode!

oh man, I’m just at the part where it let out the grunts and stepped down and over the creek, but I just had to comment!
such an incredible encounter…it is so unbelievable to hear sightings near where I grew up.
I’ve been to that area so many times and all over the parkway. I grew up on the edge of Flat Rock near Brevard in North Carolina – I’m currently on the border of North Carolina, South Carolina. It’s so fascinating, (and terrifying), to know these things are all around .
kat s
Christina, I’m 8 miles from Crabtree Falls in Little Switzerland!

Wahoo Wes! ♥️

This fellow’s ttale is not believable to me starting with the fact that he gets the location of his encounter wrong. Crabtree Falls is in Virginia NOT North Carolina. It’s in Nelson County, VA and is probably 80 miles from the NC line. His description is super detailed despite him stating he was 20-30 yards from the creature and the encounter was very limited & brief before his wife started screaming & the creature took off. Just doesn’t pass the believability test for me and I’ve heard quite a few other encounters on the show that are genuine to me.

Crabtree Falls in North Carolina is a couple of miles west of the Blue Ridge Parkway, near the Little Switzerland community, in Mitchell County. There’s a trail leading to it from the Parkway. It’s not as tall as the Crabtree Falls in Virginia.
Chad W
And now I see that there’s a second Crabtree Falls in that same area, a few miles further south on the Blue Ridge Parkway, in Yancey County. It looks more likely to be the one that is discussed in this episode, as it appears to be more significant, and has a dedicated parking area for the trailhead. Lots of falls around there!
Charles R
I bet that area in North Carolina gets a lot of traffic at Crabtree Falls. The whole Blueridge parkway is a driving destination for several hundred miles. I have only been on the Skyline Drive portion in Virginia and what an awesome parkway this is. Someday when my dog passes, I plan to do the whole trip on a motorcycle and if I do, I will remember to stop at these falls.

Crabtree falls IS in North Carolina. I live 8 miles from there.

That was an awesome episode. I agree with Weston the evidence is overwhelming. Even here in Australia with the Yowie.

a really good sighting well told 👍

Your grunting story took place in probably SW, Virginian around the turn of the century, Wes. I think maybe south of the Wytheville, VA area. This was one of your first episodes for 1.5 hourrs taken from the Crypto Crew, Crypto Brothers, something like this. Still to this day one of the most remarkable Sasquatch stories ever. The huge male was in a bush area. The female to the hunters left, I think and standing in the V of a tree estimated 500 pounds and one shot to the chest. And the male did carry it up an almost vertical rock ledge 20 or 30 feet maybe more. The next day he got a Virginia DNR officer to go with him to the spot. There was a huge amount of blood on the ground which the officer took to analyze. About a week later or so a two gentleman show up to his house to discuss what happened. Like one good cop and one huge biker type dude that was not so nice and threatened him should he ever tell the story. Later I found out who this guy was, from Dillon Montana. I will not state his name. Extraordinary episode

Bummer this is your first great discussion with your fantastic sighting. I also enjoyeed the discussion after the story. Probably the falls masked the Bigfoot senses of humans right there. Im sure that one and others have seen a lot of humans in this Crabtree Falls area. Oh darn, I’ve been discovered, so Im just going to mossey away. On the ride home your wife was coming to terms with what she witnessed that completely turned her world upside down. Just my thought. Yes Patty did not run but she sure walked away in a hurried walk. With Bob Gimlin’s help back in 2014 I estimated her walk speed at an average of a little over 7 mph. Humans arerunning at that speed.

Fascinating discussion starting with Weston’s question about being unable to move when faced with danger as a survival technique built into our DNA. I will definitely look into “gaze detection. ”
Wes- I love hearing about your bouncer days. Thought about writing an autobiography?

I had the experience of the “like being under water sound” one time. My ex BF at the time asked me why I didn’t ever walk out back instead of taking the 4 wheeler b/c it’d be good exercise and since there’s nothing to be afraid of here in PA, I decided to hike it.
I’m in N.W. PA, and I was about 2 or 3 miles hiking up the hills behind my house with my dog when it sounded like something was following me to my right and about 10 ft. back. So I stopped short a couple times until I could catch it take an extra step. Then I knew something was following me.
So I looked but I couldn’t see and I should’ve been able to as close as it sounded. Then in a loud base voice it said “hoo ya!”. It was surreal and I was saying to myself “hoo ya? hoo ya…hoo ya?” That’s when I lost all my strength and felt like I was going to pass out and it sounded like I was under water. I remembered a friend telling me whenever you pray you’re supposed to say “in the name of Jesus”, but I could barely speak. I can’t remember if I ever did get it out but I was thinking it and asking God to help me b/c I was down on my knees at this point hardly able to walk and asking God to not let it get me and give me strength to get home.
I was finally able to drag myself up and get to the top of the hill where I got onto a gas line (a road to check gas wells). That gas well road came to the road I needed that connected to my road and my strength returned enough where I was able to get home. I never saw it that time but I finally yelled out “Quit following me. You’re scaring the (expletive) out of me!” Finally it quit following me and I got home. I finally after all these years think it was trying to say “Who are ya?” or “Who are you?”
The underwater sound and the weak sick feeling I remember well.

Thank you Wes! 🌿☀️

sir, you did a fine job describing the thing you saw. I can listen to your description and gain much understanding. I’m a lawyer and have practiced over 30 years. I have listened to and taken thousand of depositions. It is obvious you are trying to describe an actual event you experienced.
it is strange/sad that our own certain government agencies, especially fish and wildlife, really started to refuse to even accept testimony from eyewitness to such encounters, especially from the 1990’s foreword. I understand that such was not your case, but I just mention this problem here. I do not know such is the case in every county and state, but many seem to be full of the same denial, though there are officers who personally took time to return to individuals and acknowledge what they saw was well known— but even that seems to be the exception and not the normative.
MUCH THX— for sharing your true story… for what it is worth, I much believe you. 👍
Sue L
I think when he grunted he somehow ushed the sound of the wives screaming. I think that is what caused the pressure

Excellent episode. Great guest.

Great episode

my favourite episode this year, such a down to earth dude, loved it

I love your show Wes and your guests and really enjoy listening to intelligent conversations like you two just had. Thing I hate is knowing that there are all kinds of weird things roaming around on our earth. Like when I listen to Fred from Alaska talking about the “the little people” that is so freaky. When I was young I would see the beautiful mountains and forests, and now I wonder what’s in them that I don’t see. From my Christian view, I know it’s not from God, so there is only one other option. Thank you Wes.

Now this is an amazing intro WES, gotta keep it moving fwd, take the “clip” from the interview and intro it! Bravo!

Weston- I hope you see this comment. Incredible encounter! Thank you for sharing. I had an odd experience at Crab Tree falls also in the fall of 2019. I was 1st person on the trail just before sunrise to take photos of the falls before anyone else got there. The birds were singing and squirrels were chattering and about half way down to the falls, it all went quiet. I stopped walking ,trying to listen and figure out why everything went silent. Then I heard 2 loud wood knocks. I quickly continued on to the falls and another photographer come running down the trail scaring the life out of me-lol. I have wondered if the 2 knocks was a signal that there were 2 people on the trail. We took our photos and I followed the other person out afterwards because I didn’t want to stay by myself. I have wondered how many people have heard or seen things along the BR Parkway with it being so thickly wooded.

Sounds like he was hit with infrasound

Thanks yall.

Wes you know he experienced infrasound. I couldn’t believe you didn’t confirm that for him. With as much as you have learned you should teach people and explain what has happened to them.
Seamus J. C
Westom, i would love to hear about any after effects, such as reluctance to reenter the woods

Virginia was that shooting of the female squat h, a fascinating account.

That hunter encounter with a male and female was in Virginia I believe

Wes and guest, thanks so much for tonight’s show. As we say up here in New England, Wicked Scary Encounter!

I wonder if the wife felt frozen as well? If Weston was subject to infrasound, and she was standing right there, wouldn’t she also have been affected? Awesome episode, the best podcast ever!
